NCES determines the net price of a college by subtracting the average amount of government or institutional financial aid a student receives from the total cost of attending the college. Listed below are the three schools with the lowest net prices among not-for-profit universities in New York for 2011-2012.
1 - Stony Brook University
The 2011-2012 net price for Stony Brook University in Stony Brook was $12,700, making this university the most affordable option for students interested in studying at a New York university. The NCES reported that in-state students paid estimated tuition and fees of $7,560 for 2012-2013. Out-of-state students paid more than double, with estimated tuition and fees at $18,180. On-campus room and board added an additional $10,934. For the 2011-2012 school year, 58% of undergraduates received grant or scholarship aid, receiving an average of $6,443. The 47% of students who were recipients of federal student loans received $6,540 on average.
2 - University at Buffalo
Offering the second most affordable option for New York students is the University at Buffalo, which had a net price of $13,109 for 2011-2012. The NCES estimated that tuition and fees for 2012-2013 were $7,989 for in-state students and $18,609 for out-of-state students. On-campus room and board added an additional $11,310 to these costs. During the 2011-2012 school year, 52% of all undergraduates received an average amount of $6,432 in grant or scholarship aid.
